“ +/-  (Positive/Negative)” • SBDAC Juried Exhibition 

Our Annual Juried Art Exhibition is asking artists to explore +/- (Positive/Negative). This prompt is asking artists to show how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Positive space refers to the main focus of a picture, while negative space refers to the background. When used creatively and intelligently, positive and negative space together can tell a story using visual composition alone. You cannot have one without the other.

The show’s purpose is to exhibit how positive and negative forces cannot exist without one another, and how they can coexist. Pieces should explore the tensions and contrast between positive and negative, both formally and thematically. Art can include opposite or opposing attitudes, symbols, energies, tricks of perception, etc.

Digital images of artwork must be received via our submission form no later than Saturday, May 13, 2017

Artists whose pieces are selected for the exhibit will be notified via e-mail on Saturday, May 20, 2017.

PREPARING YOUR ENTRY

Online Entries Only:  When preparing your entry, send one image per piece of artwork with up to two entries per person.  All entries must be digital files uploaded via our Official Entry Form.  Image files cannot exceed 500KB or 800 pixels.  The file format must be JPEG. If your piece is in progress and you do not have images of the completed artwork, please submit a detailed description of your entry and a sketch of your artwork.

ENTRY FEE AND PAYMENT

$30.00 for up to two (2) pieces of artwork.  You may enter online using a credit card.  Credit cards will be charged within 30 days of contest deadline.  Your credit card charge will be notification for receipt of your entry. Each piece of artwork must include the following information:  Title of Work, Artist Name, Medium, Dimensions, Weight, Sales Price, and Artist Statement (250 words or less).

ACCEPTANCE

Art work in this exhibition will be judged according to presentation, artistic merit, creativity, excellence and correlation to the theme. Entries will be pre-judged and then finalists will be chosen by our panel. There are no specific guidelines for artwork dimensions and proportions, but the curator encourages innovative and unique installations. All work may be accepted or rejected for display at the discretion of Florida Arts, Inc. 

JUDGING

A panel of arts professionals and collectors will review the pieces submitted to the exhibition. Pieces submitted to the exhibition should fit the call to artists and the artist statements submitted should serve to explain how those pieces fit. On June 2, 2017, a special panel of jurors will select the winner of the Best In Show. All properly prepared entries will be viewed and judged.  The decision of the jurors is final. The winning pieces will be announced at the Opening Reception.

  • The Best in Show and SBDAC’s Pick winners will be announced in the e-newsletter.
  • The People’s Choice winner will be announced on June 23, 2017 during a Sounds of Summer Concert.

 

DELIVERY OF ARTWORK AND DELIVERY DEADLINE

All accepted pieces must be delivered ready to hang, including any special hanging or displaying devices that need to be used.  Attach your name (the same name used in your entry form) to each piece you are submitting.  Please note that you must include return shipping and reusable packaging if mailing your accepted submission.

Artwork must arrive on Tuesday May 30, 2017 to: Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, 2301 First Street, Fort Myers, FL 33901.

LIABILITY

By submitting an entry to this exhibition, participants agree to insure all artwork for the full sales price while the pieces are in the physical possession of the Art Center.  The artist is responsible for all shipping costs and insurance costs during shipping to and from the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center.  We will have no liability for the protection of submitted work during shipping.  We are not responsible for lost mail.

ACCEPTANCE/USE

All artwork may be accepted or rejected for display at the discretion of Florida Arts, Inc./Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center.  Florida Arts. Inc., assumes the right to photograph any accepted work for promotional purposes only, unless requested otherwise.  All work must remain for the duration of the show unless otherwise agreed to by both parties.

SALE OF ARTWORK

All artwork must be available for purchase.  Commission of purchases from the exhibition are as follows:  60% to artist and 40% commission to Florida Arts, Inc.  Florida Arts, Inc., will process all sales and handle all State Sales Taxes.


Exhibit opens Friday, June 2nd, 2017 during the Fort Myers Art Walk in the downtown historic River District.

Art Walk operates from 6-10pm on the first Friday of every month. 

Regular Gallery Hours: Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.
