Some disabilities are invisible.
Have you ever wanted to get an inside glimpse? Think of it as a secret world, and this is your invitation to take a visit, to step inside. Keep in mind that what you see, hear, or feel is just one person’s experience with the subject matter presented. When you exit this alternate reality, remember this – things aren’t always what they appear to be on the surface.
Think of me as your interpreter or translator, from Neurotypical to my own personal language and back again.
Sarah Neat-Sullivan is an adult on the Autism Spectrum. She prefers “identity-first” language (Autistic) instead of “person-first” language (person with autism). Diagnosed late in life (at age 27) the diagnosis was a source of much relief, and an answer to many questions. Sarah aims to eliminate misconceptions about Autism – male gender bias in diagnostic criteria, romantic relationships, functioning labels, and more.
Definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) according to National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) – ASD is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Although Autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a “developmental disorder” because traits generally appear in the first two years of life… Autism is known as a “spectrum” disorder because there is wide variation in the type and severity of traits people experience. ASD occurs in all ethnic, racial, and economic groups.
