Film: Melody Makers
At the heart of the story is Barrie Wentzell’s extraordinary journey as Chief Contributing Photographer of Melody Maker Magazine (1965- 1975) and the stories behind his iconic photographic archive featuring prominent legendary musicians that emerged during the birth of rock n’ roll.
MELODY MAKERS tells the true story of the rise and fall of the most influential music publication in history, Melody Maker magazine. It began as a weekly jazz musician’s trade paper in 1926’s and by the 1960’s became an internationally recognized “must read” for rock n’ roll fans and musicians alike. Bands were formed from the back page classified section. A pop culture phenomenon!
Photographer, Barrie Wentzell sheds light on the tremendous influence the magazine had when Melody Maker dominated worldwide public perception of the new musicians and their music. Melody Makers features candid interviews with the original Melody Maker staff and Classic Rock musicians who infuse the film with new insight about the cultural significance of the paper when rock n’ roll was in its infancy and Melody Maker magazine defined the zeitgeist of this dynamic, formative and most controversial period in music history.
Melody Maker Magazine was the primary source of exposure for the up and coming musicians, and these ambitious young journalists who shared a common passion, the music. Contrary to the adversarial relationship that would later evolve between artist and the press, Barrie and the journalists were given editorial free reign and unprecedented access.
Barrie, unlike music photographers today, holds copyright to his photos following a grueling eight year legal battle to regain ownership of his photo archive. His collection features virtually every notable artist that emerged between 1965-1975 namely, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, David Bowie, The Kinks, Marianne Faithfull, The Rolling Stones, and Elton John, just to name a few.
Through his lens we see Barrie’s extensive photographic collection and hear interviews with the original staff of Melody Maker Magazine, and the musicians as they tell us riveting untold stories from behind the scenes. Through the anecdotal stories behind the pictures, Melody Makers examines this unique period in music journalism which ended in the mid-seventies due to limited and restricted access.
This landmark documentary reveals Barrie Wentzell as an unsung hero of rock n’ roll and takes a fresh look at the changing landscape of music journalism that lead to the end of Melody Maker Magazine, and a style of music journalism that no longer exists today.
