It’s the best way to show your belief in the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center mission and will positively impact the present-day and future of the Center.
Gifts of Stock
One of the most beneficial ways to make an impact with your philanthropy is through a gift of stock. Donor stock transfers are made in one of three ways:
- Electronically (DTC)
- Physical certificate – donor’s name
- Physical certificate – Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center
NOTE: One of the following procedures must be used for each and every stock transfer. Following the procedures identified below will ensure that proper credit is given to the donor.
Electronic transfer (DTC)
When donors’ stocks are held by a broker, the donor instructs the broker to send a copy of confirmation to the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, indicating his or her name, stock being transferred and date of transfer. The donor then follows up with a letter to the Davis Art Center with instructions that they wish for their gift to be designated to the Davis Art Center and instructs the broker to send the stock(s)
The Charitable Gift Annuity
The Charitable Gift Annuity is often referred to as the “gift that keeps on giving.” This popular deferred gift arrangement allows you to make a gift of cash or appreciated assets and receive a fixed amount of income in return. If you are interested in supporting the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center but are concerned about your own income stream, the gift annuity may suit your needs.
How it works:
A contract governs the terms of an agreement between the donor and the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center whereby the Art Center agrees to pay the donor and up to one other individual a fixed amount of income for life, in return for the donor’s gift of cash or securities. The payout rate is determined by the age of the annuitant(s) at the time the contribution is made.
Special Tax Advantages:
Upon setting up a charitable gift annuity, the donor receives a federal income tax deduction that is equal to the present value of the gift (the value of the gift in today’s dollars). If appreciated assets are used, the donor may be able to avoid paying income tax on the amount of capital gain recognized. In addition, the annuitant(s) only pays income tax on some of the income received each year.
Flexible Payout Schedule:
In certain situations, it may make sense for annuity payments to be deferred so that the donor or another annuitant can delay receipt of income until a certain event occurs, such as retirement. This can be accomplished by establishing a deferred payment charitable gift annuity. The payout rate is established at the time the contract is signed and is based on the age of the annuitant(s) on the date they actually begin receiving the income.
Giving to the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center through a will or living trust is often referred to as a “bequest.” The decision to use a will or a trust as your primary estate planning tool is one that should be made in consultation with a qualified attorney. Regardless of the specific type of document you choose, you can indicate your wishes in one of several ways. You can give the museum a specific amount of money (specific bequest), a percentage of all of the assets included in your estate at death (percentage bequest), or a portion of the residual amount that is left in the estate after all specific bequests have been satisfied (residuary bequest). In addition, you can designate the purpose for which you would like the gift to be used.
