Flute Lessons FAQ

What can I learn in flute lessons?

Students can expect to learn how to improve their flute tone quality and technical skills, beginning with the fundamentals and continuing to build on those during lessons. They will learn how to play major and minor scales and work through standard flute repertoire. Students are also invited to work on skills and genres that are of interest to them, including extended techniques and pop, jazz, contemporary, and modern musical styles.

How long does it take to learn to play the flute?

Every student is different, and may learn at a different pace, therefore there is no true answer. With regular practice and the help of our instructors, a basic level of skill can be acquired within a few months. Students may find that they desire lessons in the long term, to continue growing their skill set and improving. Also, flute lessons can be enjoyable!

Can I begin lessons even if I have no musical talent?

Of course! Our instructors can teach beginners to seasoned flutists, from ages 5 and up.

What events will my child participate in?

Students are encouraged to participate in local district events as this provides an opportunity to work towards a specific goal. Students have the option to participate at SBDAC hosted community events as well as a recital in December and May.

What should my student bring to the lesson?

Students should bring their flute with its cleaning materials, any assigned method book(s) and sheet music, pencils, a tuner, and a metronome. Electronic sheet music and tuner/metronome apps are acceptable.

Do I need to bring my own instrument?

The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center does not provide flutes for lessons. We can refer students to local rental businesses. It is preferred that a student have a flute to practice with at home.

What days and times are available for private lessons?

For private lessons please submit the day and time that works best for your student. Submit this information on the questionnaire portion of the registration page. The instructor will reach out to you with open availability.
