The Basics of Colored Pencil with Melissa Miller Nece
One day workshop: February 18, 2026 10a-4p
Artists’ quality colored pencils are an ideal medium for fine art – versatile, clean and easy to
master. Beginners will learn basic techniques for layering and blending colors and rendering
textures.– then apply them to a project (references provided). Experienced artists can get
guidance on completing their own projects. Various pencil sets will be available for use in class
along with other tools. Sample papers are included.

Special tools and sample papers will be provided for you to keep
Pencil sets will be available for use in class if you don’t have your own.
Recommended supplies:
Professional quality colored pencils, any size set*
Clear, artists or masking tape
Pencil sharpener (battery powered electric is best; hand-held sharpener is OK)
Graphite pencil (HB or #2 is fine)
Kneaded eraser and any other erasers you have
Drawing board or clip board to support your paper

Melissa Nece is a Florida-based artist and member of the Florida Artist’s Group. She’s a long-time instructor at the Dunedin Fine Art Center, and also offers classes at the Herrig Center for the Arts in Bradenton. Melissa has offered workshops for the Lee County Alliance for the Arts and BIG ARTS in Sanibel.
